Why wearing time decides the material before anything else, how the six band materials compare on reuse, water and print, and what the closure enforces.
Wristband specifications usually start with the material. Silicone because it looks durable, fabric because it looks premium, Tyvek because it is cheap. That is the wrong end of the problem.
The first question is how long the band stays on the wrist. Everything else, the material, the closure, the chip, the print method, follows from the answer, and a band specified for the wrong duration either falls apart in week two or costs several times what the job needed.
Both failures are expensive and only one of them is obvious. A band that fails early produces complaints, replacements and a queue at a desk. A band that is over specified produces nothing visible at all, which is why it gets repeated season after season without anybody noticing that a resort is paying silicone money for a credential that lives four days.
This guide is written for whoever specifies bands for a property or a programme: a distributor, an integrator, or the operator of a resort, a spa, a gym or a club.
A band worn for an afternoon and a band worn for three years are not the same product with different budgets. They are different products.
There is a second question hiding inside the first: does the band come back. A resort band worn for a week and thrown away is a consumable, and the arithmetic is simply unit price times guests. A gym band that is issued once and kept for three years is an asset, and the arithmetic includes reissues, replacements and the desk time each one costs. Those two calculations point at different halves of the scale above.
A synthetic paper. Tear resistant, water resistant, very light, printed in full colour and closed with an adhesive tab that cannot be reopened. Hours to a couple of days. The cheapest way to put a chip on a wrist.
Soft plastic with a snap closure. Waterproof, comfortable enough for several days, and it takes a good full colour print. This is the standard multi day band for a resort stay or a spa programme.
Woven or sublimated polyester, usually with a one time plastic or metal closure. It feels considerably better than vinyl, prints beautifully, and holds up for weeks. It absorbs water rather than shedding it, which matters around a pool.
Woven nylon with a sliding or locking closure. Stronger than fabric, handles water better, and takes a sharp full colour print. The usual choice for staff who wear a band all season.
A stretch band with no fastening, pulled on and off. Comfortable, reusable, and it needs sizing rather than adjustment. Print is silkscreen rather than photographic.
Moulded rubber. The most durable of the six by a wide margin, unaffected by water, chlorine or sunscreen, and the one that survives years of daily use. Decoration is silkscreen, debossing or embossing, not photographic print, and that is the honest trade off.
Read the table by column rather than by row. Decide which of the four questions you cannot compromise on, then look at which materials clear it, and only then bring price back into the conversation. Choosing by price first and checking the columns afterwards is how a resort ends up with a beautiful full colour band that goes soft after three days in a pool.
Artwork does not stop a band being handed to somebody else. The closure does.
Comfort is a security feature
A band that irritates gets taken off, and a band that comes off gets lost, swapped or left in a room. The material that people leave on is the material that keeps working.
One detail that rarely appears on a specification and always appears at the desk: sizing. An adjustable snap with several positions covers adults and children from one stock item, which means one line on the order and one box behind the counter. A closed loop needs a size per wrist range, which means several stock items, a sizing decision at issue, and somebody keeping track of which sizes are running out. Neither is wrong. Only one of them is invisible until the first busy morning.
Around a pool or a spa, three things attack a band: chlorinated water, sun cream, and repeated wet and dry cycles. Silicone is indifferent to all three. Vinyl and nylon handle them well. Fabric absorbs and stays damp. Tyvek survives water but not weeks of it.
Sun cream is the one most often left out of the list and it is the most aggressive of the three on printed surfaces. Oils lift ink from a printed band far faster than water does, which is why a resort band that looked perfect in the sample can look tired after a week by a pool. Where that matters, decoration moulded or debossed into the material outlasts anything applied on top of it.
None of this affects the chip. The inlay inside a band is sealed, and the failure mode around water is always the band or the closure rather than the electronics.
A wristband takes the same chips as a card. In practice three choices cover almost everything.
For short life bands, MIFARE Ultralight or Ultralight EV1, because the cost per unit dominates and a band that lives two days does not need cryptography. For reusable bands on an access system, MIFARE Classic 1K or DESFire, chosen the same way you would choose for a card. For an estate that still runs 125 kHz readers, EM4200 or a dual frequency inlay. A band is physically larger than a card, which allows a larger antenna and can improve read range. What it costs in exchange is a body that flexes, so the inlay has to be positioned and sealed for movement rather than for a flat laminate.
Two physical details are worth checking on a sample rather than assuming. A metal buckle sitting close to the antenna detunes it, sometimes enough to matter on a recessed reader. And a band worn tight against a wrist presents the antenna at an angle to a wall reader rather than flat against it, which is not how anybody tests a sample on a desk. Both are settled in ten minutes at a real door.
The last line changes the economics more than people expect. A band that repeats every season is a programme rather than a purchase, which means the artwork, the sizing and the chip configuration are worth freezing properly the first time. Keeping the second batch identical to the first is covered separately and applies to bands exactly as it does to cards.

Yes, if both carry the same chip configured the same way. This is common in clubs and gyms, where the card lives in a wallet and the band goes into the wet area.
Not photographic print. Silkscreen in solid colours, debossing and embossing, yes, and a moulded band can carry colour through the material itself.
Years of daily wear. In practice they are replaced because a programme changes, not because the band failed.
Only if the closure allows it. With a one time snap, no. With a buckle or an elastic loop, yes, and the credential is then reassigned in your system rather than on the band.
Slightly. A larger band allows a larger antenna, which helps. Metal in a buckle close to the antenna hurts. Both are settled with a sample tested on your own reader before the full run.
Yes on the printed materials, where a sequential number, a barcode or a QR code is applied with the artwork. On silicone the durable equivalent is a laser mark or a debossed number. The variable data guide covers how the file has to be supplied.
Silicone and the woven materials are well tolerated by most people, and there is no adhesive against the skin on a snap or buckle closure. Where a property expects long wear across many guests, silicone is the usual answer for comfort as much as for durability.
